During a recent state visit to Canada, Vietnamese President To Lam announced the elevation of Vietnam and Canada’s bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership. This development marks a significant step forward in the cooperation between the two nations, encompassing areas such as trade, energy, agriculture, defense, technology, and education. Both countries share a common interest in enhancing resilience, diversifying partnerships, and maintaining a rules-based international order.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed support for this advancement, highlighting the growth in bilateral ties since a 2017 cooperation agreement that covered investment, defense, and academia. Canadian officials emphasized that the new strategic partnership will continue to focus on energy, agriculture, defense, and fostering stronger people-to-people connections.

Vietnam stands as Canada’s largest trading partner in Southeast Asia, with merchandise trade between the two nations surpassing $20 billion last year. Canada exports commodities like food, metals, and fertilizers to Vietnam, while Vietnam supplies Canada with electronics, clothing, furniture, and footwear.

Both countries are also participants in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), a trade agreement that provides a framework for expanding economic cooperation across the Asia-Pacific region.

The upgraded partnership arrives at a time when both Vietnam and Canada are seeking to diversify trade and supply chains amid global economic uncertainties. For Vietnam, this move is part of a broader strategy to expand its international economic relationships beyond its reliance on major markets.
