In a bid to fortify regional security and foster cooperation in the Pacific, Australia and Fiji have forged a historic Ocean of Peace defence alliance. Supported by A$1 billion from Australia over the next ten years, this agreement represents a monumental step in enhancing diplomatic and security ties between the two nations. The pact was formalized in Suva with the presence of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, marking a new chapter in their bilateral relationship.
Alongside the defence agreement, both countries also signed the Vuvale Union treaty, which covers a wide range of areas including economic cooperation, climate change initiatives, healthcare, migration policies, and infrastructure projects. This comprehensive treaty aims to strengthen the overall partnership between Australia and Fiji, addressing key issues that impact both nations.
The defence alliance itself is characterized by mutual security commitments, obligating Australia and Fiji to consult and take action against any threats that compromise their sovereignty, peace, or stability. Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the significance of this partnership, describing it as one of Australia’s most critical international alliances.
