In a move that has rekindled debate over state identity and national pride, US President Donald Trump has proposed renaming New Mexico to “New America.” Trump argues that the change, which he announced on social media on October 19, would bolster national pride and potentially enhance property values and incomes within the state.
Trump’s proposal is not new; he initially floated the idea in September when he shared an altered map using the name “New America” while endorsing a Republican congressional candidate. In his recent post, Trump also cast doubt on the integrity of elections in New Mexico, alleging electoral misconduct, though he provided no evidence to back these claims.
The suggestion has been met with resistance from New Mexico’s leadership. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham dismissed the renaming proposal, emphasizing the state’s historical significance and cautioning against politicizing its name. She stated that her administration remains focused on pressing issues such as healthcare, housing, childcare, and education access.
Trump’s proposal for New Mexico follows other renaming initiatives during his second term, such as the federal adoption of the term “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico and the restoration of the name Mount McKinley for Alaska’s Denali. However, no official steps have been taken to rename New Mexico.
