In response to growing concerns about the environmental footprint and electricity demands of datacentres, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is working to align state and territory leaders on a cohesive national strategy. At an upcoming national cabinet meeting, he is expected to advocate for legislative measures that would establish uniform minimum standards for the development of datacentres. These standards aim to ensure that datacentres shoulder their infrastructure costs, help prevent increases in energy prices, and minimize water usage.
This initiative comes as Australia’s energy market operator predicts a significant increase in electricity consumption by datacentres over the next decade. This surge is largely attributed to advancements in artificial intelligence and the expansion of cloud computing. Projections indicate that datacentre electricity usage could leap from approximately 5 terawatt-hours to 34 terawatt-hours by the fiscal year 2035-36, potentially comprising 13% of the country’s total electricity consumption.
Currently, Australia hosts 165 operational datacentres, with 225 more projects in the pipeline. Despite this growth, the sector faces instability, as many previously proposed projects have been abandoned. As part of their development requirements, new datacentre projects will need to assess their potential impacts on local communities and be strategically positioned away from residential neighborhoods, schools, and crucial agricultural or prospective housing lands.
In parallel with these efforts, Albanese is also crafting comprehensive AI legislation focused on copyright protection, security, safety, and skill development. The government anticipates that these reforms will facilitate economic benefits from AI innovations for Australians while safeguarding creators’ rights and enhancing national security.
However, the proposed framework has encountered resistance from some state leaders, particularly concerning the renewable energy stipulations for datacentres. This disagreement underscores the political complexities of reaching a consensus on national regulations for this rapidly evolving industry.
