In a bid to tackle the rise of AI-generated music, Spotify is rolling out a new initiative to help users differentiate between human and AI-created artists. Starting in September, the platform will label AI-generated artist profiles and tracks with an “AI persona” tag. This label will be visible on artist profiles and within track listings, allowing listeners to easily identify whether the music they are enjoying is the product of artificial intelligence or a human creator.
As part of this initiative, Spotify is also modifying its recommendation algorithms. By default, AI personas will be excluded from personalized recommendations, a move designed to safeguard exposure for human musicians who might otherwise be overshadowed by the surge in AI-generated content. This step underscores Spotify’s commitment to maintaining a balanced musical ecosystem where real artists continue to thrive alongside technological advancements.
To ensure accuracy in this identification process, Spotify will not solely rely on artists to self-disclose their AI status. The company plans to implement a combination of human reviewers and AI-driven tools to flag any undisclosed AI personas. This proactive approach comes as the industry faces a significant influx of AI-generated music, with Spotify having previously reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a span of 12 months, pointing to the vast amount of artificial and potentially low-quality content infiltrating streaming platforms.
Transparency is becoming increasingly critical in the music industry as generative AI technologies become more prevalent. Spotify’s recent measures reflect a growing desire among listeners to understand the origins of the music they consume. As AI continues to evolve and integrate into music production, distinguishing between human and AI contributions is likely to remain a key concern for both the industry and its audience.
