OpenNebula Systems has rolled out OpenNebula 7.4, nicknamed “Helix,” the newest update to its open-source cloud and virtualization platform, aimed at streamlining enterprise cloud management and meeting the rising needs of AI infrastructure. This latest version introduces a revamped Sunstone management interface, which provides cloud administrators with a more efficient and user-friendly experience. Key features of the update include enhanced navigation, resource inspection capabilities, rearranged settings, and GUI-based VirtioFS management, all designed to optimize routine cloud operations.

The 7.4 release significantly boosts automation with features like OneSwap for bulk VMware migrations, refined OneDRS resource scheduling, intelligent datastore choices, and storage migration enhancements. Additionally, improvements to OneKS facilitate managed Kubernetes deployments, aiding organizations in modernizing their infrastructure while simplifying operational complexities. The platform is also geared to support AI and high-performance computing workloads by integrating Axelera AI accelerators, native NVIDIA GPU support within the Slurm appliance, and automated Bare Metal as a Service (BMaaS) orchestration through the NVIDIA Infrastructure Controller (NICo).

Networking receives a substantial upgrade with VLAN Group-level authorization and Open vSwitch Switchdev support, enhancing performance and ensuring secure multi-tenant environments. The release bolsters backup and data protection via updates to the OpenNebula Backup Exporter (OneBEX), introduces Selected Disk Backups, and offers production-ready compatibility with Ubuntu 26.04. Further enhancements cover storage, monitoring, networking, high availability, and increased VMware compatibility.

In conjunction with the platform update, OpenNebula Systems has launched OpenNebula Apps (OneApps) 7.4.0, which includes updated virtual appliances, AArch64 support for OneKS, compatibility with Alpine Linux 3.24, and deployment improvements tailored for enterprise cloud environments. The company emphasizes that OpenNebula 7.4 is designed to help enterprises streamline cloud operations, drive infrastructure modernization, and support the evolution of AI-driven private and sovereign cloud deployments.
